In the fall of 1999 I was looking for a woodworking project to entertain me through the winter.  In the past I have built not only our home (I personally hammered every nail, ran every wire/pipe, built all cabinets - everything) but have constructed and flown two airplanes. There also have been various other smaller projects like entertainment centers and dinning/coffee tables, ect.

But I have always enjoyed boats. Currently I have a 20' Bayliner runabout and a Seadoo jet ski.  During the summer I am the happiest when on the water enjoying the fresh air and sun. So when the idea of building a boat came to mind it seemed like the perfect project.

After a couple weeks of intensive research I decided on Glen-L's "Cabin Skiff".  I was looking for a small craft with a cabin as would help lengthen So. Illinois the boating season. The "stitch & glue construction intrigued me. Also, the boat needed to be small enough it would go out my 9x7 door on my shop.

I will say I am very fortunate when it comes to my shop. I own an old commercial building where my office is located.  The front has been remodeled  but the back 2/3s serves as my "play area". It measures 22x60 with a 11' ceiling. I also have all the major stationary power tools - table saw with rolling tables to easily handle 8' sheets, radial arm saw, thickness planer, 6" jointer, band saw, stationary sander, drill press, cut off saw, shaper, dust collection system and even a large drafting table. I also have a small metal lathe and milling machine.

I ordered the plans and studied then intently for about a week and decided the project was a go.  I then ordered the "stitch & glue" kit and the "building the Console Skiff" video (I highly recommend the video - to me it was well worth the $20).  I will say Glen-L was very prompted with shipping and their prices are reasonable. They also have been very helpful when I have called with questions.

I received the kit on 10/26/99 and construction began that evening!
